FreeTwinEV

The FreeTwinEV project aims to strengthen the research capabilities of the Slovak University of Technology (STU) in the field of Digital Twinning for advanced battery management systems.

About the project

Fostering Research ExcellencE of STU in Digital Twinning for Sustainable and Safe Electric Vehicles

The FreeTwinEV project aims to strengthen the research capabilities of the Slovak University of Technology (STU) in the field of Digital Twinning for advanced battery management systems. The project seeks to position STU as a leading hub for cutting-edge battery research in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), through a lasting strategic partnership with University of Twente, Linz Centre of Mechatronics, and ADDSEN.

FreeTwinEV explores the opportunities stemming from the Slovak Research and Innovation Smart Specialization Strategy and the large automotive industry base of the country as the largest car producer per capita in the world.

The project targets increasing research and development (R&D) and innovation capacities, particularly in improving state estimation and energy management of battery systems. These advancements will primarily benefit electric vehicles but also extend to stationary battery energy storage. FreeTwinEV’s research aligns with the European Green Deal, as extending battery life by just 20% could potentially reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 million tons annually. The project promotes sustainability by repurposing batteries for uses such as renewable energy integration and grid support, fostering a circular economy that reduces the ecological impact of battery disposal.

Through a series of twinning initiatives, including mobility exchanges, summer schools, joint training sessions, and enhancing STU’s Project Office, the university will adopt best practices from its partners. This will significantly boost STU’s scientific reputation and visibility in the field of electric vehicle research and battery management systems.
