From Simulation to Innovation: Inside the Digital Twin Summer School

From May 21–23, 2025, the University of Twente hosted a dynamic three-day Summer School on Digital Twin Development for Battery Systems. The event brought together PhD students, researchers, and industry professionals from across Europe for an intensive learning experience at the intersection of battery technology and digital innovation.

Organized under the FreeTwinEV project, the summer school was a collaborative effort between the University of Twente, the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Linz Center of Mechatronics GmBH, and ADDSEN.

The program offered a hands-on, immersive journey through the latest advancements in digital twin technologies for battery systems. Participants explored a wide range of topics through expert-led lectures and interactive tutorials, including:

  • System Engineering approaches for developing Digital Twins
  • Battery modeling using Python and simulation tools
  • CAD-based design and prototyping of battery systems
  • Thermal and hydraulic modeling with CFD
  • Digital Twin architectures for next-generation Battery Management Systems (BMS)
  • Soft skills in project planning and pitching research ideas

Beyond technical learning, the summer school created valuable opportunities for networking and collaboration between academia and industry—helping to shape the future of smart mobility and battery innovation.
